Chodesh Tamuz is this Thursday & Friday (3rd & 4th July).
Thoughts from the Rabbi's Desk
There is a
beautiful idea that is learnt from a Rashi in this week’s sedra. “And
G-d said to Moshe and Ahron, because you did not believe in me to
sanctify me in the eyes of the Benei Yisrael, therefore you will not
bring the congregation to the land which I gave them.”
Rashi comments
that had Moshe spoken to the rock, (rather than hitting it) and it
would give forth water, then Hashem would have been sanctified in the
eyes of the Jews. They would have declared “If this rock which does
not speak and does not hear fulfils the will of the Almighty, all the
more so should we”.
Kiddush Hashem is
generally understood to mean that we should strive to always create a
positive impression so that God’s name should be sanctified. Here we
learn that it is not merely that one should be impressed by another’s
righteous behaviour. That is not where it is supposed to end, it is
not sufficient for some to think that you acted in an elevated
manner.
Kiddush Hashem is
when other people are influenced to improve their behaviour, as a
result of seeing your behaviour. If one behaves in a way that
influences and inspires other people to follow God’s will – that is
Kiddush Hashem!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Garson.
