This Shabbat is Parshat Ekev
/.

This week's Parshat Ekev

When we look at recent events, it is clear that those who lead the financial and political worlds –those one might call the upper echelons of society – have not been the perfect examples of ethical
rectitude.
In Ekev, Moses asks the question: "What does Hashem ask of you?" (Devarim 10:12). His answer follows on: "Only to fear the L-rd your G-d ..." The word "only" implies being asked to do
something which is not very difficult. Now, we know that the fear of G-d is not easy to achieve. The Gemara considers this and says that, as far as Moses was concerned, fear of G-d was not difficult.
The Kli Yakar (R' Shlomo Ephraim Lunshitz, 1550-1619) says that this needs clarification as the Torah is speaking to everyone, and we cannot compare anyone to Moses. He gives two answers,
one of which is relevant to our times. He says that the fear of G-d appertaining to the generation who lived in the time of Moses should not have been so difficult. The reason for this is that Moses, who was elevated to a spiritual status unique in Jewish history, gave an outstanding example of leadership which set a model for others to follow in laying a foundation for a society based on eternal values.
What can we expect from the younger generation, when those who should be guiding them have no sense of right or wrong? The Kli Yakar is pointing out that, as Moses was a shining light in
his time, so the leaders of every nation, whether in the spiritual or secular sphere, should act in such a way as to reflect honour on themselves and, by their example, bring about a healthy and principled society.
